SPP, which will begin offering classes in September of 2010, was founded in October 2009 by two Seattle parents, Derek Stanley and Cynthia Rowand. Their positive cooperative education experiences with their own children won them over to that model of preschool. Their desire to integrate social and environmental values into a preschool curriculum propelled them to found SPP.

While there are preschools and even coops that are known for a particular social or environmental cause, Derek and Cynthia wanted to promote a school that embraced the full spectrum of social and environmental issues that fall under the progressive umbrella.  Rather than be limited to one central issue, this model allows families in the coop to bring to the classroom issues relevant to their family.  The hope is that the personalization of the school’s curriculum will help families of varying backgrounds understand one another and invigorate the program each year with fresh energy.
